A comparison between the new ceramic 335 and the 317

Jan 27, 2010,04:02 AM

Here are some more photos that I took at the SIHH in Geneva. The ceramic 335 is a new ceramic watch that was introduced this year. The watch is basically a PAM270 in a ceramic case. Because Panerai had many problems with the PVD coated case back of the 317, they came up with a "smoked" case back crystal instead for the new 335. I'm told that 80% of the movements that were made for the 317 didn't make it through the quality assurance tests which resulted in Panerai having to throw away those movements. That must have had quite an impact on delivery times of the watch. I think not all 317's have been produced and delivered to this date (don't know for sure).

I didn't take any wrist shots but I was wearing a black shirt at the show and the watch simply looked amazing on the wrist. This one will hunt me in my dreams for a while.

You can see the new "smoked" case back crystal in the two pictures below. The movement itself has not PVD coating (something that the 317 does have)

Note that the case back is made out of titanium. This is also true for the 317 which is something I hadn't noticed before.

A comparison shot of the two ceramic Luminors. 317 on the left, 335 on the right.

And a comparison shot of the case backs. 317 on the left, 335 on the right.

The following pics show that the luminova is cream colored. I also think that the numbers are just a little bit smaller than those on for instance the 270 and 317.

The color in the last pic is a bit off - but it does show the sandwich dial and the domed crystal nicely.

Thanks for looking,
Martin

these are all the pics I have - but I can assure you that the crystal is still domed. Exactly the same as it is on the 317,270 and 233. Cheers, Martin

You're saying 80% of the movement in the 317 which is the same as the 311 and whatever the references nos are fotr the steel and rg equivalent, did not pass and was ditched? I'm interested as I am interested in the 311 which is the Ti equivalent of the 31...

Martin was referring to the movement w/ special coating didn't make the QC test. I'm sure the standard movement from 311 WITHOUT any coating is perfectly fine. I would imagine it's the minute 'thickness' of those extra layer that's creating the quality pr...

Thanks for the clarification. [nt]

The comment its ONLY related with 317

 By: nacho m : January 27th, 2010-10:33
The movement has to be coated for that special piece, and that has created a lot of problems. I know people that is still waiting the 317 for almost 2years now. Its nothing related with the 275 or 311.

Exactly, this has to with the coating of the movement - not the movement itself...
