I think many of us are in the same path..
Nov 04, 2011,04:54 AM
similar age, similar path in watch taste. I don't have the knowledge to pick out icons. and going in full circle...like many have mentioned, why would I care if it were anyone else's icon. As long as it speaks to me, both aesthetically and in terms of movement, then it could well be my icon. part of how a piece "grows" on you would definitely have some to do with the discussion that goes on here and many of the more respected forums. I admit that I wouldn't have known many things if it wasn't for this forum and I definitely don't have the time to waltz around in boutiques, ADs etc checking out every single piece until some sang to me. so basically what I'm trying to say is that I don't agree when people say that it doesn't matter if someone else likes it or if it is everyone's fad etc etc. It does matter. The fine print is that it should be the comments/views of people that you personally respect and are influential to you.
probably nobody knows me here, so if I were to argue that this isn't a nice piece and I would go for a daytona, it probably wouldn't have much weight. one of the reasons why daytona is so successful (I personally don't like it because it doesn't "sing" to me) is that not only does it capture the masses, it actually is a very robust piece, inspired by the auto world, tried and tested with time. it also sings with the enthusiasts, which is really rare.
I think the balance comes when you put everything together and you can go for some that are truly inspiring pieces and some that you just want to look good. 15202 or 15300? I went through that same exact phase. At first they were the same to me. Now they are completely different pieces. Which did I choose? I went with the 15300 because it actually looked better on the wrist for me.
trust your own judgement while knowing everything you can about the piece. Not whether more people like one over the other but why they do.
good luck!

WOW! New AP limited edition GSTAAD Jules Audemars Chrono in titanium
By: edwardwchang : October 30th, 2011-20:02
I tried on the new AP gstaad LE chrono in titanium (same watch as the only watch donation but with a titanium case) and WOW! It totally blew me away. My logical mind wants to resist the purchase because its totally impractical for my beach bum lifestyle (...
It is definitely a looker...

And one of my favorite new APs. The titanium JA case is gorgeous, and the RG pusher button is a very nice touch.
ADs?
By: edwardwchang : October 31st, 2011-08:08
Does anyone know if this watch is AP boutique only or will ADs also carry it?
Hello Edward.
By: MichaelC : November 1st, 2011-06:21
I don't have a definitive answer to your question. Certainly it is a very limited run, created for the Gstaad Classic in Switzerland. Did you try the piece on at a boutique? As Horo indicated, the samples sold through the AP boutiques in Gstaad and Geneva...
Boutique only
By: edwardwchang : November 1st, 2011-17:54
I called AP NYC to check and this watch is AP boutique only which means a fixed retail price. ugh.
a picture speaks louder
By: Hororgasm : October 31st, 2011-16:02
I like everything about the watch, except that its a limited edition of 250 pieces. love the 1920ish inspiration and the cross stitched strap. if you get in Switzerland AP Boutique, you get a special leather clad case imitated upon old car travel trunks. ...
I find this a very exciting LE.
By: MichaelC : November 1st, 2011-06:31
AP has created very unique pieces this year for both the Gstaad Classic and Tour Auto racing events. They have a longstanding association with these racing events. A titanium Jules Audemars and a new SS Millenary; I am very pleased with the use of these A...

...AP has been my brand of choice for 30+ years. And it still is today, but only because I choose to ignore all the LE ROOs that are now the company's mainstay. I don't mean to offend the many ROO owners here, but I'm much more of a traditionalist and ove...
I see what you mean and I largely...

...agree with your stance that 'if it works, what's the problem'. But for me the issue is that I cannot help but associate any co-branded watch with the tawdry and crapulent offerings in so many co-brandings (watches and otherwise). To wit: This was one o...

By: edwardwchang : November 3rd, 2011-02:15
I pretty much thought that you were single handedly buying up all the LEs
cant decide whether to buy
By: edwardwchang : November 1st, 2011-08:07
I havent pulled the trigger on this watch yet because I dont know if I will love it long term or if it was a lust/one night stand type of thing. compared to the white gold or rose gold version its a great deal, because the titanium lowers its price by alm...
if you do not know...its probably not for you...now
By: Hororgasm : November 1st, 2011-14:48
and I suspect it will be not be sold out, unless you seek the special 50 pieces with the special watch case. and I concur with your relative positioning of this watch against its competition. except this watch looks vintage cool....something its competito...
1920s vintage cool
By: edwardwchang : November 1st, 2011-18:02
Yeah, the design does scream Art Deco and I do LOVE art deco objects, e.g. JLC reverso classique. so the design of this titanium Gstaad LE JA Chrono is my favorite thing about it, hence my concern that its lust and not true love. I'm in my 30s so Gstaad i...
One thing to consider about the vintage look...
By: Emil Wojcik : November 2nd, 2011-11:26
...Anything classic will never go out of style. That's why watches like this are still being designed and developed today. It's a safe bet they will sell and won't look dated in a year or two. That's not something that you can say about a lot of today's w...
I agree with your abstract points, Emil. "vintage look" has certain implications
By: ThomasM : November 3rd, 2011-01:25
Hi, Edward, There is nothing wrong with falling in lust with a look, as long as what is "under the hood" doesn't disappoint. How important, really, are an integrated in house movement? If it's really that important, look elsewhere. If, like most people, i...
thanks for weighing in Thomas!
By: edwardwchang : November 3rd, 2011-01:54
enjoyed your interview in robb report. really appreciate you weighing in. understand about the classic auto rally inspiration for this piece but I was speaking to how all the toys for boys events that inspire these LEs; the auto rallys, regattas, yacht ra...
Exactly, Edward.

But you can't compare a manual chrono with an automatic one. It is like if you compared a Turbo with an atmospheric. The Dayto is the champion, even if there are some other very nice choices. One example? Go and have an eye on the Girard Perregaux Vintage...
No more stupid than the Stupid SEAL, I agree, Thomas.
By: amanico : November 3rd, 2011-03:12
No more " clever ", either... All the brands should avoid LE's when they are only marketting things. A change of the dial, for example, justifies a LE? I don't think so. A LE could be justified by the use of a very technical material, such as Alacrite, or...
I would follow you, here.
By: amanico : November 2nd, 2011-23:28
But the price wouldn't be the same, though. But I don't care, if it is a nice manual movement, to pay more. Now that you're mentionning that, I would even consider that a manual movement, on such a vintage looking watch, SHOULD BE manual. Best, Moses. Nic...
manual movement would increase the price
By: edwardwchang : November 3rd, 2011-01:36
a manual movement would increase the price by 33 to 50 % take the lange 1815 chrono for example, it actually has a MSRP of a few thousand dollars LESS than the jules audemars gold regular production chronos. so movement wise, the lange 1815 chrono is a go...
