I've got a friend who wears a gold rolex datejust that's probably 30 years old, anyway, he says if you're gonna buy a watch, buy a solid gold one, because if you ever need to eat or a bed to sleep in and you need to hock or sell it, the "guts" (movement) ... 

That is the strangest advice I've ever heard

Gold is good, of course. But with Rolex, the SS models are universally more desirable,except in rare examples. The SS model which is sought after is worth far more than its gold counterparts, generally. I do say this without meaning to denigrate the advic...

i know the question was about market value, but it seems to me that gold vs. ss would also depend on the particular watch. some just look better, to me at least, in one metal or the other. i think a day-date looks great in white gold. submariner looks gre...
