sky high expectation...letdown reality
Mar 07, 2012,21:37 PM
What a let down. This is its best angle.
I wanted to like it so much since I'm always a sucker for GMT/World Time function...Annual Calendar is a big plus. Sadly, the design just looks so awkward, there are no other way of putting it. I'm quite certain that many people will have a big beef with that inner GMT ring.
Rolex should have moved that red triangle to the inner side and make the ring larger/more proportional.
Come to think of it...Rolex, can you please add this Annual Calendar function/design to the Explorer II? I think that would be a GREAT design/addition to that model

big disapointment!
By: doublesix : March 7th, 2012-05:09
they must have spent more time and money designing the teaser on the website prior to the release!
Hahaha
By: willski : March 7th, 2012-07:39
Haha, what a response! I have to say, the design is not my cup of tea. The price is the vinegar on top... It seems to be the new trend of calendar month indicators is around the outside of the dial..off the top of my head this, the ALS Perp. Tourb., the C...
I almost died when I saw it.
By: TdotBean : March 7th, 2012-07:51
Honestly I thought I mistake it for the new Datejust. Too bad that I was right ... sigh Not dwelling in space anytime soon. Regards Tyler
Great technique-wrong case!
By: tempus : March 7th, 2012-08:25
This is a really ugly watch, don't the have eyes? This complication in a 42-44mm case and pure design like their professionell watches (Submariner, Yacht-Master I, GMT etc.) would have been a great launch. But this I can't understand :-(
A Picture

It should be a tool watch!...
interesting
By: Mystiqz : March 7th, 2012-05:45
thanks for the photo
Seriously???
By: MasonBella : March 7th, 2012-08:53
Is this a joke? April Fools isn't until next month. What a disappointment this year from Basel. I like the no date sub, but the others........ I'll bite my tongue.
ugly and way too expensive
By: Bruno.M1 : March 7th, 2012-05:52
Calendar yellow gold (bracelet ) € 36.785 Calendar white gold (bracelet )38.900 Calendar pink gold with strap € 31.460 you can almost get a Patek calendar for that price
I feel realy dissapointed with this new model...
By: Subexplorer : March 7th, 2012-06:51
... judging for the pictures I viewed at least. Also, the fact of not offering the model in an SS version, puts the watch in a High League level, which many Rolex followers (included myself) will not reach. Well, definitively, this announcement makes me c...
That is the problem with teasings.

This red arrow, and the 24 hours ring + the name let me think about something which could be of interest.... Till I saw the first pictures... End of the dream, start of th disappointment. Best, Amigo de la Pampa. Nicolas.
Subdial
By: ingmar : March 7th, 2012-18:34
I may not like the sky portion but I love the annual feature and hope to see it added to other models soon. But the ring plus the arrow just make the dial uneven (at least in photos).
The dial..
By: MervC : March 7th, 2012-08:21
The dial is too busy for my taste.
Hot and cold.....
By: JMan : March 7th, 2012-08:22
I love the features - bezel activated functions, understated annual calendar, dual time zone, good looking movement. These leave me cold - looks, never liked the fluted bezel and still don't, 24 hr ring that dominates the dial without needing to, overall ...
LMAO!

this watch must be inflected by radiation and mutated. Very disappointed.... as I was shocked by the rainbow daytona...I wanna say What the XXXX.......

Except bthat I am not a fan of annual calendars, and that I would not be pleased to see it on an Explorer II, except the last one which I don't like... Best, Nicolas
It is a shame
By: CaliforniaJed : March 7th, 2012-22:24
..that what appears to many (myself included) to be an ugly duckling houses what appears to be a truly interesting movement from Rolex. Who would have guessed we would see an annual calender Oyster (and with a rotating GMT ring)? That sounds really cool t...
I spoke too soon. I like the dial!
By: CaliforniaJed : March 7th, 2012-22:58
Nicolas, have you played with the interactive watch on the Rolex site? It is REALLY COOL! The bezel rotates to select adjustability from the crown of date and month (did you see the month apertures???), local time and reference time. This thing is unique ...
ya it is cool!
By: Ogygia : March 8th, 2012-00:23
the different angles of the bezel can let the crown couple with difference function for adjusting time / 12hour jumping centered hour hand / Date. In addition, I was browsing at china watch forum. Half of them like the outlook of this watch....
I am with CaliforniaJed here..
By: ocwatching : March 8th, 2012-12:26
the movement and the mechanics are really interesting and nice to see Rolex trying in new directions.. but the execution in "supersized" flueted bezel case mixed with the iconic "dweller" name just does not work for me... ahh..Rolex...what are we to do wi...
totally agree...
By: mjnoumoff : March 8th, 2012-06:03
the exterior design is far from impressive. not a fan of the dial design and use of a DJ design case. putting that aside, the (interior) movement and innovation is pretty awesome. an annual calendar with a GMT function THAT is operated using the crown and...
Why I love it
By: cisco : March 8th, 2012-05:03
-Technically It is truly innovative, an elegant and playful way to set GMT; Date, Hours. -Aesthetically, It is a typical Rolex. The case is ok, though I love normally vintage here I find this version nice, the bezel, the dial, no inspiration from other br...
Thanks for your elaborated answer, François.

At least you don't bark with the crowd, which is anb excellent thing. Agreed on the mechanically side, disagree on the aesthetical side, but hey, Vive la difference! Best, Nicolas
Me too! [nt]

No message body
Looks very much like a DJ but at an astronomical price.
By: patrickmaniac : March 8th, 2012-17:17
Interesting to have the bezel to tune the other functions but still at that price point (excluding the usual launch premiums), does it make sense? The Yatch master in blue looks better to me or maybe t's just my "rolex" stereotype. cheers PAt
If they continue in this path!
By: mpiz : March 9th, 2012-07:41
Then the oldies would start to gain momentum in the pre-owned market. I mean seriously...this is outrageously ugly. What's more SKY-Dweller! Rolex has lost its way, I say...
