Equation of Time on a Panerai: well done or an absolute mistake?

Feb 07, 2015,12:47 PM

At the 2015 SIHH, Panerai unveiled a Luminor 1950 and a Radiomir 1940 with an Equation of Time display.

It is obviously not the first time Panerai uses this complication since it was already displayed in the Astronomo dial several years ago.

This complication provoked a lot of strong discussions between the watches fans on several media. Basically, the main criticism was the inconsistency between the complication and the purpose of the watch.

When I saw it, I was not chocked at all: after all, it is a way for Panerai to use a complication with a linear display. But honestly, this watch wouldn't be on the top of the list of my fav Panerai.

The questions are as follows:

- do you find the use of this complication appropriate?
- is Panerai trapped in this aesthetic approach?
- shall Panerai propose a new style of watches in order to host this kind of complication?
- how do you see the future of Panerai? is Panerai able to re-invent itself?

A lot of questions but I think that these new watches gve the right opportunity to discuss about these topics.

Thanks for your inputs!

Fx

IMO, this watch is a total nonsense, as it is...

Look at this dial... Where is the consistence? Totally busy, at the contrary of the DNA of the brand, bo balance at all, like if the guys in charge of the development added things here and theren without following a line, an idea... Uninspired. NOW, Paner...

You ask the right questions....

... and some answers are hidden the questions you are asking. "innovate or die" : Panerai will have to face it sooner or later The equation of time is a very nice feature, used by AP also, but not many watchmakers, so that's a big plus and there is someth...

Panerai's history is its greatest burden

Panerai has IMO most characteristic and fanatic following in world of watches...they know what they wanna and they wanna more of the same :) On any other watch this EOT and configuration of dial would be something that is acceptable on Panerai it is a jok...

Yes, but Panerai is also said to be a Laboratorio de Ideas.

So, why not new concepts? But with a new line of cases. The inconsistence may kill Panerai. Finding new ideas won't.... IF consistent. Best, Nicolas

True very true.....

but personally I can't imagine i.e. rectangular case or to tonneau one and Panerai on the dial :) Panerai is case more than any other watch (pun or no pun) :) Yours D

Actually, Panerai was a Rolex Case...

3646, 6152 and 6154 were Rolex cases... Not a rectangular one, but a nice round one, why not? An elegant case which coudl house elegant complications, in an italian way... Or why not, ala Rolex, elegant, functional, fundamental... But with a smaller and n...

.... and not only case :)...

They are consistent in constantly forcing everything into 2 type of cases good or bad time will tell Cheers D

maybe even 4 or 5 if

Submersible case is not considered Luminor case and "transitional" like 372 is different case so more cases than some other brands :) ;)

Panerai's history is his biggest burden..

so true... the the constant struggle between what build the brand up and what will take the brand forward... its been like this since 2010...the brand is trying to grow but constantly takes two steps back for every one forward... they release the the awes...

vs the 365

 By: piquet : February 8th, 2015-06:58
weirdly i loved the 365 as the ultimate in panerai complication, here was a great movement in the expanded classic case with a more complex design. i do love the minimalism and design language panerai use, but for some reason it doesn't work here, the EOT...

I agree with you..

If it comes with domed crystal I would be on my wishlist. Tommy

How to construct a functioning Equation of Time

 By: dr.kol : February 8th, 2015-11:21
without integrating it to perpetual calendar; or annual at least? Best, Kari

For me, I think Panerai's design of the Equation of Time doesn't work

 By: AnthonyTsai : February 8th, 2015-11:59
It just looks awkward to me, and I think many others feel the same way. That's why you don't see anyone here posting owner pictures of any of the equation of time Panerai's. And yes, it would be more fitting if Panerai introduced a new case (and possibly ...

I also feel that....

what should have been a..show piece...(the Astronomo) has been taken out of its context and depaupered, for reasons that, I believe, can only be traced in a...jokeying for position..scenario. I also believe that, taking the original dial and case, and pop...

Well done on a technical basis

... but of all complications this one is the last i'm interested in :) and at that pricepoint i wonder who will be ?? No seriously this is certainly not the kind of PAM we were waiting for I guess.

IMHO Panerai missed the train this year...

... presenting another limited series of the Mare Nostrum following the Mega size of the original. I feel this is a collectors "for display only" watch, like the Egiziano which very few owners will find suitable for daily wear. I was waiting for a new ver...

I can see your points

 By: Stack : February 19th, 2015-22:53
I think they look nice but I think the complication is something that doesn't really reach out to a ton of collectors. At least in my opinion. The other thing I noticed on this piece when I saw it in person is that the month indicator seems to probably co...
